March 2018 – Designing Shoes

After studying the anatomy of our legs and feet and the mechanics of motion, we asked our students to design and create their own shoes using cardboard, tape, and other recycled materials.  Their shoes needed to provide the functionality of a basic shoe — protection, improved stability & balance, increased friction, and support for the anatomy of the foot.   They also had to fit their own feet and be wearable — the students had to wear their shoes.  Of course they also didn’t overlook the aesthetics of the shoes — they weren’t “Air Jordans” some of them were quite stylish in their own way!
