In our after-school program we are studying ecology and the world around us. When we spent the afternoon outside on our “Creepy Crawly Critter Scavenger Hunt” we discovered that there are many interesting and exciting insects all around us, even in the fields behind the school.
After that we created worm boxes — homes for earthworms complete with food scraps, leaves and grass, recycled paper, and soil — and then introduced our live worms to their new homes. No matter how hesitant they were about the prospect of holding and examining live worms everybody eventually realized that worms are really amazing creatures! All of our after-school sessions start off with us checking in on our worms to see how they are doing, giving them more food, and (of course) looking for new little worms!
